US admissions considers a student’s transcript and AP exam score report alongside their essays, teacher recommendations, etc. AP exams are one part of the holistic picture that is most pertinent to US applications (as opposed to other countries). Collingwood does not offer all AP courses, and a student may have an outside interest such as AP Art History or AP Music Theory that they wish to explore. For a student who is passionate about that subject, it may make sense to self-study and take the exam. Students should reach out and discuss this with their UG, as one of many extracurricular enrichment options. If Collingwood does offer the AP course, however, the question might arise for an admissions officer: why would a student take the exam outside, when they could have taken the course in school with their classmates and a teacher?

As noted above, Collingwood allows students to take a maximum of 10 AP courses at school between Grades 10-12. This policy usually offers more than enough opportunities for students to take the AP courses in which they are most interested. Furthermore, there is no expectation that a student would take an AP course or exam earlier than Grade 10.

Please note that while Collingwood does not offer the AP Chinese course in the timetable, the school does offer students the opportunity to register and take the exam at school every other year. The next opportunity to write AP Chinese will be May 2025. Registration information will be communicated to students during the preceding fall.

Additionally, please note students at Collingwood can pursue two distinct AP Awards: APID (Advanced Placement International Diploma) and AP Capstone Diploma. These awards are very prestigious and students can earn them by taking five or six APs respectively. Further information can be found on the College Board website.
