'Losing Light' Shines at Zoomfest
'Losing Light' Shines at Zoomfest

A month ago, several of our film club and film class students assembled for a BC wide student film challenge, Zoomfest, where students are given 48 hours to conceptualize, write, cast, produce and edit a film based on a PROP and a PROMPT. The Prop was a compact disc and the prompt was "there is no such thing as a free lunch." Of the 102 films that were submitted from across the province, 15 films were selected with ours, "Losing Light", being one of them. Nominations are determined by an impressive jury comprised of filmmakers, producers, writers and educators from across the lower mainland.

The Zoomfest awards gala was hosted at Mulgrave School on Saturday, November 24. There was a red carpet, dazzling lights, plenty of suits and gowns and a very impressive ice sculpture. On our arrival, our team found out we were nominated in FOUR categories (Screenplay, Sound Design, Art Direction and Best Actor in a female role). We had smashed our previous year's record of 2 nominations! Heading into the theatre for the awards the kids were super pleased.

We ended up winning first place in Sound Design. Although this was a team award, Charlotte A. was largely responsible for this award for the original song/score that she wrote and performed for the film. Our second massive victory was for Best Actor in a female role (Farryn VH).

Congratulations to the cast and crew of "Losing Light". They gave a lot of heart and effort as well as applying knowledge and experience, especially Nikolai O., the director of the film.

The winning film, including our other film created for Zoomfest, will be screened for the first time at Collingwood during the Winter Art Show on Wednesday, December 12 from 4:00-6:00 pm at our Morven Campus.
