Cavs Defeat Brentwood In Stadium Series

The senior rugby team defeated Brentwood College 34-5 yesterday in an all-important Stadium Series game. The two teams came into the game knowing that the winner of this match can count on being ranked higher at the BC Championships so a lot was on line.

The game started poorly for Collingwood as they mishandled the opening kick-off and found themselves under all sorts of pressure from the tough BCS forwards and their slick backs. However, fortune smiled on the Cavs when Duncan Bustos put in a terrific clearing kick from deep in the Collingwood zone. Good kick-chase defence rattled the BCS back-three and a wayward pass was gobbled up by Ethan Lucke and he streaked 50 metres with the intercept. Duncan Bustos convert made it 7-0.

Mere minutes later, Collingwood followed this up with a sublime piece of back brilliance as they spun the ball wide and Ethan once again galloped down the field for a long-distance try. The Cavs were now up 12-0.

The Cavs followed this up with another terrific try as Cole Young found himself in open field and he put the pedal down and left BCS defenders in his dust. With Collingwood up 17-0, BCS was definitely in shock.

The Cavs added a Duncan Bustos penalty and looked to be going into halftime with a healthy 20-0 lead. However, another excellent kick by Duncan and more good kick-chase defence led to another gift try as a BCS winger dropped the ball and then failed to react to his mistake. Nate Holm swooped in and picked up the ball and scored the simplest of tries under the posts.

The only shadow on this amazing first-half performance was the fact that Tyler Preston left the field with a very serious shoulder injury. This is a huge blow to the team.

BCS found their composure in the second half and it was a tough battle. Collingwood dominated for long stretches but only scored one try. Ethan recorded his hat-trick after Nate put him away for a scamper into the corner of the end-zone.

BCS scored on the last play of the game to make it 34-5.

Graeme Neil-Klein, Cole Young and Cam Bruk celebrate Ethan Lucke's second try of the game.

Cole Soprovich looks to move the ball as most of Collingwood's forwards look on.

Duncan Bustos fakes to Graeme Neill-Klein. Duncan had a terrific game as he masterfully mixed up the offence with crashes, wide movements and tactical kicks.

Nate Holm had a fantastic game as he was sharp offensively and a beast on defence.

Tyler Preston's injury is a huge blow to the team. He was the Cavs #1 jumper and ball-stealer. The rest of the forwards are going to have to step-up since he is out for the season.
