Inclusive Education, Learning Support, and Resources

At Collingwood School, inclusion is an attitude and approach where all students in our community feel a sense of belonging. By teaching to diversity, we create positive learning environments that facilitate the full membership, participation, and learning of all students. We are committed to excellence in teaching, personalized learning and leadership–empowering students to reach their full potential as learners.

We have intentionally designed models for supporting students that are age appropriate based on child development research. We closely monitor the success of ALL of our students and provide foundational learning supports to everyone as part of our base tuition schedule.  We also offer specialized and targeted supports for a limited number of students who meet the eligibility criteria.

Primary Model of Learning Support: (K-Grade 3)

Each child’s growth in literacy and numeracy is closely monitored.

Baseline assessments are administered throughout the year so that we can identify and provide early interventions for fundamental skills acquisition to a student with a demonstrated need.

We have Inclusive Education faculty at each grade level who work alongside Homeroom teachers to provide in-class and/or out-of-class small group learning supports.

Beginning in Grade 3, we offer targeted 1:1 literacy skills and personalized instruction to a limited number of students who meet eligibility requirements.*

Intermediate Model of Learning Support (Grades 4-5)

All students are provided with support through the collaborative planning efforts of our faculty who work in grade level teams.  Universally designed curriculum planning provides all students with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding and extend their thinking skills.

The progress of students with identified learning differences is closely monitored and documented in an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which includes accommodations to reduce barriers for learning.  Small group supports are provided in-class and/or out-of-class, where appropriate.

We provide 1:1 literacy skills and personalized instruction to a limited number of students who meet eligibility requirements.*

Middle Years Model of Learning Support (Grades 6-7)

Inclusive Education teachers work collaboratively with subject specialist teachers to observe and extend in-class supports in all academic areas for all students.

The progress of students with identified learning differences is closely monitored and documented in an Individual Education Plan (IEP) which includes accommodations to reduce barriers for learning.  Small group supports are provided in-class and/or out-of-class, where appropriate.

We provide small group, highly personalized instruction to a limited number of students who meet eligibility requirements.* This includes explicit instruction in: learning strategies, assistive technologies and support for executive functioning with the goal of creating student independence and self-advocacy.
