EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION

Collingwood is committed to recognizing, addressing and eradicating all forms of racism and oppression on campus and in the broader community. We understand that we all come from different and diverse backgrounds, and recognize that individuals in our community are at various points along this journey. We also acknowledge that bias can be unconscious or unintentional and that racism and oppression is the combination of social/institutional power plus prejudice. To be an unbiased community, we are committed to being purposeful in our efforts to identify, discuss and challenge issues of race, Indigenous identity, class, gender identity or expression, sexuality, disability, ethnicity, and religion and the impact(s) they have on our students, families, alumni staff and faculty.

Our two-year plan involves education and stakeholder consultation in an effort to both educate and understand all members of our community. We have broken this process out into three phases: Exploration and Education; Engagement and Action; Plan Development.

The ultimate goal of this process will be the creation of Collingwood’s first Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Plan. All voices are important. Thank you for taking this journey with us.

CONSULTATION AND ENGAGEMENT

Collingwood has embarked on a two- year consultation and planning process that will result in an Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Plan for the school community. The goal of this plan is to ensure that teaching and learning at Collingwood takes place in an environment in which every member of our student body, faculty, and staff feels safe and is treated with dignity and respect. In doing so, it will support our mission to prepare young people for meaningful lives and advance our core values of courage, curiosity, and community.

In addition to supporting Collingwood’s mission and values, we believe that our EDI plan will help us to build a stronger school community that leverages a range of backgrounds and skills to enhance creativity, innovation, and problem solving. It will assist in attracting and retaining diverse students, faculty and staff. It will cultivate leaders who inspire inclusion and champion diversity, and increase school community engagement, motivation, and productivity.

Thank you for contributing your voice to this process. Our EDI Plan will be grounded in learning from all stakeholders—students, parents and families, alumni, Board of Governors, and faculty and staff. A heartfelt thanks to those of you that participated in our school-wide consultation in January and February—whether by attending a small group meeting online; by completing our anonymous on-line survey; or by sending in a written submission. The input received is being considered by the review team as we move forward with our plan.
