The Collingwood wrestling team had an unbelievable weekend. Coach Tom Larisch has so much depth this year that he split the team in two with squad's top wrestler in each weight category competing in the JP Fell Cup in North Vancouver. 12 other wrestlers were so committed that they met at the school at 5:00am on Saturday morning to travel to the Queen Margaret School tournament in Duncan.
With Coaches De Cotiis and Velasquez leading the way, the wrestlers that stayed on the North Shore competed in three different dual meets. The Cavs defeated a combined Van College/St. Thomas More team. They then defeated a combined Abbotsford Schools squad. Then in their final meet of the day, the Cavs narrowly lost to the North Shore team that had wrestlers from seven different schools. It was an incredible display of wrestling.
Meanwhile in Duncan, Collingwood's wrestlers overcame the fatigue from their early morning wake-up and won the Senior Team title. Once again it was a terrific display of wrestling.
And if that wasn't amazing enough, the Island squad had such exemplary behaviour and deportment on the way home on the ferry that both the Junior School and Senior School Heads received an email praising our athletes. For Coach Larisch this was the 'giant cherry on top of the sundae' on a fantastic Saturday of wrestling for Collingwood.
Ceola K won provincial gold last year. On Saturday, she travelled to Duncan where she competed but also helped Coach Larisch coach and mentor the Grade 8 wrestlers.
