Last Week In Basketball - A Big Week For All 8 Teams
David Speirs

Every week during basketball season is extremely busy for our teams but last week was a particularly exciting time.

The senior boys were one of the hosts for the No Regrets Tournament.  The Cavs hosted three games on their home court including the tournament semi-final against Dover Bay.  Dover Bay won the AAA BC Championships last year and are one of the favourites to win the AAAA crown this year.

With that in mind, it’s not that surprising that the Cavs played hard and played well but were no match for the Dolphins.  This was despite an absolute epic performance by Sam L who nailed 11 of 18 three-pointers on his way to 46 points.

In the third-place game, the Cavs would fall to Harry Ainley from Edmonton.  Once again this was a David versus Goliath story as Ainley has 900 students per grade and Collingwood has 120.  Nevertheless, Coaches Wong and Ross were thrilled to have the Cavs play teams of this calibre as it will only help the squad to get better.

The senior girls’ team also had a great week with resounding victories over Sutherland and Chatelech.  The Cavs were coming off a very successful trip to the Greater Victoria Holiday Tournament.   Collingwood posted wins over Queen Elizabeth (Surrey), RE Mountain (Langley) and Spectrum (Victoria) at the tournament with their only loss coming to the eventual winners Port Alberni.

So far this season, all the Cavs have seen lots of court time and have contributed to the stats line on D and O. Offensively, Sara D, Campbell S, Gracie W and Andrea B have led the attack, with Sara D and Campbell S averaging 24 points and 22 points and 10 rebounds respectively over the last three games. Defensively, Camille B, Kate Y, and Miral N are creating chaos for the other teams with their intense-pressure D.

In other boys’ action, the Grade 8 and 10 boys were triumphant against Lord Byng last Tuesday during the Collingwood versus Byng program day.  The 8’s followed this up with a 41-34 win over Carson Graham.  The Grade 9 boys lost to Byng but they rebounded well with a 56-18 victory over Elphinstone.

It was also a great week for the Grade 8, 9 and 10 girls’ teams.

The 10’s defeated Seycove 37-20 in league play before falling 48-28 to the mighty Argyle Pipers.  The Cavs then headed off on an Island adventure as they travelled to Courtenay for the GP Vanier Tournament.

The Cavs played four games and won three of them only losing to the host school.  Along the way they beat Nanaimo District Secondary School (Player of the Game – Abby W), GP Vanier Grade 9’s (Player of the Game – Heidi C), Belmont from Victoria (Player of the Game – Salma W).   In the loss to Vanier Grade 10’s, Kensie C was Player of the Game.  The Cavs also gave out their own Team Awards after every game with Tahlia N, Salma W, Maddy G and Claire L winning these awards.

The Grade 9 girls pushed their North Shore record to 3-0 with a big win over the Lion’s Gate Christian Academy.  Coach Burnett’s crew have a big week ahead of them as they are entered in the GW Graham Tournament in Chilliwack.

The Grade 8 girls defeated STA 34-24 and followed this up with a 45-24 victory over Rockridge.  The Cavs then travelled to Pitt Meadows on Friday for a tournament.  Sadly for the Marauders, they chose poorly who to feature in the big ‘spirit game’ as the Cavs silenced the rowdy home crowd with a 40-26 win.  Unfortunately, Collingwood did not get to follow up on this success as Pitt Meadows had no power on Saturday so the rest of the tournament had to be cancelled.
