Collingwood Students Excel at Math Contests

Darien Allan (Head of Department, Math)
From the lively buzz of students debating math problems and making sense of complex challenges and brain twisters to the focused intensity of collaborative problem-solving where students pull together all their mathematical skills and knowledge, Math Club has been an exhilarating success this year!

Our Math Club is a vibrant mix of students from Grades 8 to 12, meeting twice a week. With anywhere from 10 to 30 eager participants in each meeting, the room is always filled with energy as they dive into exciting mathematical challenges.

The months of October and November are particularly busy with contests, at all grade levels. We are also very excited to share some of our students’ incredible results.

Students work together during a senior math class.

Past Contests

Canadian Intermediate and Senior Mathematics Contests

A record number of Collingwood students wrote the Canadian Intermediate Math Contest (CIMC). Twenty wrote from Grades 8-10 and we had five students write the Canadian Senior Math Contest (CSMC - Grades 11-12). Our preliminary results are impressive, and official results will be coming soon.

American Mathematics Contests (10 and 12)

Students write a math contest at Collingwood in 2024

Many students also wrote the American Math Contests (40 AMC 10 contests written and 15 AMC 12 contests written). The students prepared well and we had an outstanding 10 qualifiers for the American Invitational Mathematics Contest (AIME); four of whom are in Grades 8 and 9.

Lynx Math Contest (gr 8-10)

Our own Frank (Zhengyuan) Z. (Grade 10) was 1 of 7 Canadian students and 1 of 10 overall to achieve a perfect score on the Lynx Math Contest in early October. See the writeup here.

Canadian Open Mathematics Contest

We also had a large cohort write the Canadian Open Mathematics Contest, with official results just released. These results were incredible, with one student qualifying for the Canadian Mathematics Olympiad (CMO) and a second student invited to complete Repechage as a second chance to earn a spot.

Upcoming Contests

AMC 8 and PCFE Contests

Coming up in February, some students will be writing the Grade 8 American Math Contest (AMC 8), as well as a number of Canadian math contests (Pascal (Grade 9), Cayley (Grade 10), Fermat (Grade 11), Euclid (Grade 12)).

American Invitational Mathematics Contest - February 6

The AIME is a 3-hour math contest which the ten students below have qualified to write. (Fun fact - if they do very well on the AIME, they may qualify for the USAMO - a 9 hour contest written over two days). Congratulations to the following students for qualifying for this contest:

  • Leo K. (8)
  • Brian G. (9)
  • Lucas Y. (9)
  • William Q. (9)
  • Frank Z. (10)
  • Danny R. (10)
  • Xiuming (Daniel) L. (10)
  • Xiao Bo Z. (11)
  • Meixi Y. (11)
  • Luck S. (11/12)
Canadian Mathematics Olympiad - March 6

Daniel L. (Grade 10) has qualified for the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). This is absolutely incredible! To our knowledge, a Collingwood student has never qualified for this contest.

Luck S. (Grade 11) has been invited to participate in the Qualifying Repêchage for this year’s Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). This will take place from Jan 27-Feb 3.

The CMO will be written on March 6.

Canadian Team Mathematics Contest at Waterloo - April 8

We have been invited to participate in the Canadian Team Mathematics Contest at Waterloo. We finished 7th overall (of the in-person teams) last year, and will likely be even more competitive this year! It will be held April 8, 2025 at U of Waterloo.
