1. Laura Groos and the Start of our School
  • Historic Moment
Jill Slattery

West Vancouver resident Laura Groos hoped for an independent school on the North Shore for her two children to attend and spearheaded its creation. Together with 12 other Board members, she rallied other parents who shared her desire for a co-educational, non-denominational education option on the North Shore, and secured the leadership of David Mackenzie, a respected educator.

Through her tireless efforts and with the dedication and support of other parents, the Collingwood community was born and the school opened its doors to its first students on September 10, 1984. Offering a well-rounded education, with a focus on academics, arts, athletics and service, 241 children in grades 1-8 attended on opening day. Notably, Laura Groos served as the first ever Board Chair of Collingwood School from 1983-1985, playing a pivotal role in its establishment and early success.

You may be interested to know that Laura also proposed Collingwood as the school name, in honour of the H.M.C.S Collingwood, a ship built for the Canadian Navy in 1940 and commanded for a period of time by her father, Captain David Groos.

Collingwood is grateful for Laura’s continued support. As someone who has stayed deeply connected to our School, Laura often attends celebratory and alumni events and can occasionally be found at “House” events to cheer on Groos House!
