Golf Team Wins North Shore AA Title

Coach Payne has sent in this report about the golf team's terrific day at Squamish yesterday.

The golf team won the AA North Shore Championship yesterday by a sizeable 11 strokes.  As usual, Alix Kong led the way by shooting 77.  While most young golfers would be satisfied with this score, Alix was somewhat disappointed, but had little time to dwell on it as she was rushing to the Vancouver Island for a Future Links Tournament.

Pierce “Mr. Consistent” Kamansek came to play with a positive attitude and patient approach. He also felt that he left a couple shots on the course but finished with a solid 82.  Undoubtedly, the Grade 12 veteran will be looking to improve upon this score next week in the zone playoffs.

This year's golf team may have more depth than any other squad in the past.  Zamaan Jiwani could not make the North Shore Championships so we needed to rely on our up and coming golfers. Two thirds of the Terrific Trio came to play and demonstrated that you better watch out for these young flyers. Dillon “Tin Cup” Cooper came out firing and finished the round with an exciting 80. The other part of the Terrific Trio Ben “Clutch” Basran tied for the second lowest score of the day with a 78.

Amar “Maverick” Mainra displayed excellent leadership throughout the day. Amar had a tough front 9 but showed his poise and was on fire for the back nine, finishing with an 88. The boys and Alix are extremely excited to bring the AA North Shore GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP back to Collingwood.

We now have our sights on qualifying for the Provincials!

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK - APRIL 22 - 27

Leigh Sawchyn caps a great year in athletics by being nominated as Athlete of the Week in three different senior sports.  Leigh is currently captaining the girls soccer team and led them to two very respectable results last week in league play and was outstanding at the ISA's this past weekend where the team went 2-2.

Hailey Szybunka has finished 1st in three different events in the exhibition track meets this year.  Hailey has won the 100m, 200m and Sprint Hurdles.  Quite the amazing feat for the Grade 9 student who has also starred on the field hockey pitch and basketball court this year.

Jeff Sutcliffe has been on the senior cricket team since Grade 7.  He is now a seasoned veteran and the team captain.  Jeff scored the most runs for the team last week against some very tough fast bowling by the St. George's speed bowlers.

Thor Eggertson was outstanding in both senior rugby games last week.  He single-handedly shut down the Windsor attack by constantly stealing their ball in contact situations.  He was also terrific in the tough loss to McRoberts.

Titans Toppled - Cavs Rout Mulgrave

The senior rugby team overcame a sloppy start to defeat Mulgrave 51-10 yesterday.  Despite plenty of ball in the early going, Collingwood wasted a number of terrific scoring chances and then allowed Mulgrave to score the first try of the game.

The realization that Mulgrave was a skiilful side capable of scoring from anywhere re-focused the Cavs who suddenly started to take far more care of the ball.  This resulted in four very good tries by halftime.  Taylor Milliken scored twice including a fantastic 70 metre romp on the counter-attack.  Marshall Fuller and Colter Alexander also added first half tries.

The Cavs quickly increased their 22-5 halftime lead with tries from Nick Ludwig, Jaxon Jones and Marshall.  By this time, most of the starters were out but Collingwood's bench strength was evident as the team continued to play well.  Austin Wright and Cole Byrd scored the final two tries of the game.

Taylor Milliken finishes off a great run with his second try of the game.

Marshall Fuller powers through a Mulgrave tackler.

Austin Wright scores in the corner with Matt Holmes in close support.

Golfers 3rd At ISA's

The golf team competed in the ISA's on Monday and were on their way to a silver medal when it was dicovered that one of the scorecards had been signed with an incorrect score.  With ensuing the disqualification, the team dropped into the bronze medal position.  This unfortunate incident cannot take away from a terrific day of golf for the team.

As usual, the team was led by Alix Kong who shot a 74.  Zamaan Jiwani followed this up with an impressive 79 and close behind him were Owen Stout (81), Pierce Kamensek (82) and Amar Maina (84).

On the same day, Collingwood was also fielding a team in their league match against STA.  Coach Payne sent a very young squad to compete on the links in Squamish and the results proved that there is plenty of competition for the top 5 spots on this years' team.  Nick Lewis fired a terrific 76.  Ben Basran notched an 80, Dillon Cooper an 82 and Owen Snider 93.

The team will compete next Wednesday in the North Shore AA Championships and has high hopes of moving onto the Zone Championships.

Pierce Kamansek, Zamaan Jiwani, Alix Kong, Owen Stout and Amar Mainra enjoyed a great day of golf at Morgan Creek Golf Club.

Great Results At Brentwood Regatta

The Brentwood Regatta is one of top rowing events in the Northwest.  In order to be competitive at this event, you really need to be at the top of your game.  This past weekend, Collingwood sent our three top rowers and the results were excellent.  Here is a report from Madison Mailey:

Collingwood Crew and Coaches Jacoby, Fraser and Weise attended the 43rd Annual Brentwood International Rowing Regatta. This is a major event and last year over 2000 athletes, coaches and officials participated. This year’s attendance was similar with both club and school teams from Washington State, Oregon, and B.C. competing for glory.  Our athletes Brynn Danvers, Madison Mailey and Carlo Quicho, braved the 1500-meter course with C-Wood courage.

This year our Grade 11 crew met considerable competition being in Junior A divisions (Grade 11 & 12 athletes). Their collective outcome was stellar and included these results:

Danvers & Mailey Jr A Women 2x A Final     3rd place

Brynn Danvers       Jr A Women 1x A Final   3rd place

Madison Mailey     Jr A Women 1x A Final   4th place

Carlo Quicho         Jr B Men 1x B Final       2nd place

Brynn and Madison power their way to a terrific 3rd place finish.

Tennis Team Finishes 2nd In North Shore League

The senior tennis team defeated Carson Graham last week before losing a tight match yesterday to AAA perennial powerhouse Sentinel.  The team finished in 2nd place with a sparkling 6-1 record.  Collingwood now prepares for its North Shore playoff game against Carson Graham on Monday and its AA Zone Championship match with St. Thomas More next Wednesday at Hollyburn.

Here are Coach Rose's game reports on the Sentinel and Carson matches:

Yesterday, our senior tennis team lost a hard fought battle with Sentinel by a score of 4-3. This leaves our team in second place in the league standings behind Sentinel. We play Carson Graham next Monday at Murdo Fraser courts in the North Shore semi-finals. Against Sentinel, Jack Huebner and partner Isaac Davies won 6-3 and the girls doubles duo of Victoria Konantz and partner Tina Haertel won 6-0. Our mixed doubles team of Alex Oubari and Tomoe Yazawa also won.

Last Thursday, our senior tennis team ran its record to an impressive 6 wins and 0 losses with a 5-2 victory over an improved Carson Graham squad. Winning matches were turned in by Iacopo Beltramo in boys' singles and mixes doubles, Kyla Jarrar in mixed doubles, Hailey Reeves and Victoria Konantz in girls' doubles, Aidan Jarrar and Colton Kerfoot, as well as Jack Huebner and Isaac Davies in boys' doubles. Next match is Monday vs perennial powerhouse Sentinel at Sentinel.

Cavs Beat Dukes In Senior Rugby

The senior rugby team defeated Windsor 44-0 yesterday.  Despite having six starters on the sideline, the team played very well and scored some terrific tries.  Marshall Fuller, Taylor Milliken and Harrison Sekhon all scored two tries.  Ben Teo and Bailey Speirs each scored one.  Taylor added two conversions.

Man of the Match was definitely Thor Eggertson who dominated the contact area and personally stole at least 10 balls from the Windsor team. Adam Bushell also had a good game controlling the offence from flyhalf.

Collingwood's next game is Tuesday against Mulgrave at Klahanie at 4:00pm.

Ben Teo romps in for Collingwood's first try of the game.

Harrison Sekhon runs in his first try with Taylor Milliken in support.

Jaxon Jones gets ready to run over some Windsor defenders.

Bailey Speirs on his way for a try.  James Kardos is in support.
